XXV Regata Illes Balears Classics

14.08.2019 - 17.08.2019

August 09, 2019

Club de Mar Mallorca will host from 14 to 17 August the XXV Illes Balears Clàssics regatta with over 40 participants from nine countries.
Argos, Rowdy and Orion will seek a revalidation of their titles from last year and Marigan will try to repeat the victory she got in the last Mare Nostrum Circuit race.
A nautical painting exhibition and the conference "Embracing the world. 500 years of the first circumnavigation", by General Carlos Pérez-Urruti, will be the center of the cultural programme of the event organised by Club de Mar.

The boats Argos (Classics), Rowdy (Bermudian Rig) and Orion (RI Classics) start out as head of the series to win the 25th Illes Balears Clàssics Regatta, organised by Club de Mar Mallorca, which will be held in the Bay of Palma between 14 to 17 August.

Last year's winners are, initially, the big favorites wo win a regatta that will presumably be very close, as pointed by Manuel Nadal, the Club's commodore and head of the organisation.

The entry list includes winners from other races from the Mare Nostrum Circuit, where the Illes Balears Clàssics takes part, as Marigan (1898), who won as Gaff Rig in the last Puig Vela Clàssica held last June in Barcelona, or the Argentinian Cippino II (1949), winner in the 2018 edition of the Copa del Rey of Classic Sailing in Mahon. "The level of the fleet -says Nadal- is again very high and guarantees a great regatta spectacle in Palma, considered as one of the most important in the European classic sailing calendar".

The participants will sail divided into six categories, depending on their year of launch and their rig: Vintage (until 1950), divided into Gaff Rig and Bermudan; Classics (between 1950 and 1976), Spirit of Tradition and Latin Sail.

FIFTH CENTENARY

The Illes Balears Clàssics is part of the commemorative programme of the fifth centennary of the first circumnavigation, the beginning of which took place 500 years ago. For Nadal, to be able to honor the memory of such distinguisehd sailors as Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano is a reason for pride in Club de Mar and a coherent move within an event that, beyond the competition, seeks to promote the conservation of the patrimony and the naval history.
As an addition to the commemoration of Magellan and Elcano's journey, the regatta has scheduled a talk on 16 August at 19:30 titled "Embracing the world. 500 years of the first circumnavigation" by General Carlos Pérez-Urruti, Navy Infantry Brigade General and commander of the Protección de la Armada (GEPROAR), as well as a great expert in Spain's maritime history.

EXHIBITION AND OPEN DOORS

The social activities include an nautical painting exhibition by the British artist Anna Boulton, open for free visits, and the traditional open doors day on 16 August from 5.30 p.m. for all visitors who wish to see the classics up close.

SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMME

Club de Mar Mallorca will erase all single-use plastics in all its departments, events and regatta it organises.

The first step towards this goal has been to deliver stainless steel reusable bottles by Cleanwave to all its employees as well as the installation of a purified water fountain provided by the local company Agua KMZero. This supply device will be available for the first time during the XXV Illes Balears Clàssics.

This initiative has the support of the real estate agency Engel & Völkers, also a collaborator of the Illes Balears Clàssics and sponsor of the regatta and competition team in Club de Mar Mallorca. The short-term elimination of plastic containers is one of the main sustainability aspects in the club. In addition to the delivery of these bottles, there will also be informative actions to bring awareness about the damaging effects of plastic discharges into the ocean.

Cleanwave will install a 6-meter high botlle as a purified water fountain to make it more visible to all the regatta participants and club users.
